Crossroads Culinary Tour
On December 6 and December 13 of 2012 the PSS toured the new Crossroads Culinary Center in the Ellicott Complex. The tour included a peek behind the scenes at the University's newest dining facility and lunch.
Diversity Committe Pot Luck Luncheon
On December 4, 2012 the PSS held its annual diveristy pot luck luncheon. Delicious food and interaction among staff was enjoyed by all.
PSS Day with UB Football
On October 20, 2012 the PSS held its second annual tailgating event. The Homecoming event was followed by the University at Buffalo Bulls game against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
Diversity Brown Bag Workshop: Lunch and Learn
The Diversity Committee sponsored an informative brown bag luncheon on October 9, 2012. Dr. Athena Mutua, UB Law School professor, discussed the “Commission on Academic Excellence and Equity Report.”
Sustainable Living Fair
PSS held this 4th annual environmental event on September 18, 2012 to raise awareness of environmental stewardship and help faculty, staff and students "green" their homes and their lives. Check out photos from the event!

Plant Exchange Luncheon
Around 50 people attended the 3rd Annual Plant Exchange Luncheon on June 12, 2012 in the Student Union. Attendees participated in a one-for-one plant exchange and went home with some new plants to beautify their gardens.
Staff Development Conference:
Are you Up to Speed? Every Conversation is an Opportunity for Success
This one-day conference held on June 1, 2012, promoted staff development, job satisfaction and tools to improve professional and personal communication styles. Bestselling author, keynote speaker, and internationally recognized communication expert, Debra Fine, a 15+ year member of the National Speakers Association presented her programs to hundreds of audiences around the world. Breakout session topics included: Understanding Emerging Web Technologies, Making a Name for Yourself Every Time You Lead or Attend a Meeting, Stress Busters!, Are You Emotionally Intelligent?, Are you LinkedIn?, Speed Up Your Reading, How to Get Published: Personally and Professionally and How Does Your VOICE Speak for You? Dr. Catherine Ansuini provided the Last Laugh and we finished the day with a boat cruise on the Grand Lady.
Supervisors’ Learning Forum:
Toolbox for Continuous Improvement—How This Can Help Me and My Department?
PSS partnered with the department of Organization, Development and Training (OD&T) to offer this learning opportunity on May 22, 2012. Attendees learned about continuous improvement and what it really means, especially in a workplace as complex as UB. Continuous improvement takes a holistic view of processes, products and people, creating an enthusiastic workforce trained to remove barriers and make an impact. Attendees also learned about how using a structured project method can help managers and staff make informed decisions, leading to more efficiencies and cost savings. This thinking ties in directly with the 3Es of UB’s strategic plan—efficiency, engagement and excellence.
PSS Clothing Drive
In the season of giving thanks, PSS organized a professional clothing drive to help those in need to join/rejoin the workforce. We welcomed donations of women’s and men’s new and gently used professional clothing on behalf of Haven House, YWCA, Every Woman Opportunity Center, Inc, and Workforce New York. Collections were taken at the November 17, 2011 General Membership meeting and at drop locations throughout both campuses.
2nd Annual PSS Summer Potluck Picnic
On June 29, 2011, PSS hosted the 2nd Annual PSS Summer Potluck Picnic where they provided hot dogs and hamburgers for over 70 people. Amazing dishes were shared among all who attended.

Diversity Brown Bag Workshop: Valuing and Respecting Diversity
The Diversity Committee sponsored a brown bag workshop with Dr. Raechele Pope of the Educational Leadership and Policy department on April 6, 2011 in the Student Union. Dr. Pope’s research interests and publications fall under the general rubric of multicultural education. Her research examines the components of a multicultural environment and the necessary, concrete strategies, competencies, and practices to create and maintain such campus environments. Specifically she has focused on multicultural organization development in higher education, multicultural competence for student affairs administrators, and psychosocial development of college students of color.
Staff Development Committee presented Brown Bag Lunch Workshops
The PSS Staff Development Committee hosted a two-part brown bag lunch workshop in spring 2011. Ed Brodka, career counselor at UB Career Services presented on a variety of topics related to career development.
- Part 1: Resumes: What Every Professional Should Know: Make sure that your resume is up to date and effective if a new job opportunity arises. Learn what to look for on a resume when hiring new professionals or student assistants. Check out the handout (PDF).
- Part 2: Interviewing: What Every Professional Should Know: Attendees learned how to enhance their interviewing skills to be better prepared if a new job opportunity arises. They also learned how to effectively interview candidates for professional or student assistant positions.

The PSS Staff Development committee hosted two financial sessions called "Has Anyone Seen My Identity?" on November 16th and "Financially Safe" on December 9, 2010. Participants of this workshop were encouraged to access and print their credit reports by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.
A Taste of UB: Celebrating our Diversity: Festive Potluck Luncheon
PSS members brought a dish to pass while they attended A Taste of UB: Celebrating Diversity on November 4, 2010 in the Student Union. The event included a talk about "Opening the Conversation: Exploring Diversity and Self-Awareness, facilitated by Henderson Woods, LLC – Building Workplace Relationships/Improving Outcomes Consultants. A potluck lunch and networking followed as music was provided by The Bryant Cullins Jazz Quintet from the Historic Colored Musicians Club. Check out the recipes from the event.
2009 - 10 Academic Year
Plant Exchange at UB
This past spring, 35 participants donated perennials, small trees and even raspberry bushes for the UB Plant Exchange. For each plant donated, participants selected a plant to take home. Plus, a car-load of plants were donated to UB Community Gardens. Donna Banach organized the event. Co-hosts were Liz Felmet, Amy Hothow and PSS members Janiece Kiedrowski (Chair) and Ann Marie Landel (Vice Chair). See photos of the Plant Exchange.

During the spring 2010 semester the Staff Development and Services Committee conducted a series of tours around UB’s various units. See the flyer (PDF) for the full details.
Ryan McPhearson provided an overview of reform efforts taking place in Albany at the PSS General Membership meeting held on January 21, 2010. His presentation (PDF) outlined the key players and advantages for UB. More information on the Public Higher Education Empowerment Innovation Act can be found on the NYS Department of the Budget website.
